Upper-end wages usually reflect years of skill progression, broader responsibility or difficult assignments—not entry-level pay.
Licensing and credentials
Electricians and plumbers often need state or local licenses. Specialized credentials can expand the work you are legally or practically able to perform.
Industry and geography
Utility work, dense metros, specialized industrial settings, overtime and union contracts can materially change compensation.
Hours and total compensation
A $100K total-compensation package is not the same as a $100K base wage. Always compare base pay, overtime, benefits, travel and schedule.
Do not choose a trade from the top-10% number alone.
Compare the median, growth, annual openings, training length, physical demands, licensing rules and local wages. A career with a lower national ceiling may be a much better fit in your state or for your preferred schedule.
